Great Ideas Notebook

More of my notes from Great Ideas 07:

Dan Heath:

  • If you want it to stick, then SAY SOMETHING.
  • It takes courage to say something so clearly that it can be refuted or even proven wrong.
  • Identity is more powerful than narrow self-interest.

Ned Hallowell:

  • We are sacrificing the capacity to think and feel deeply.
  • When you go fast, you don’t go deep.

Howard Ross:

  • Four percent of men in this country are 6’2” or taller, yet 36% of corporate CEOs are 6’2” or taller.

(and I’ll bet not one of those corporate boards said “Hey, let’s pick the tall guy.” It just happens unconsciously. The same is true with race and gender. Discrimination is not about Archie-Bunker-style bigots trying to keep people out. It happens because we (dominant group members) are not aware of our biases)

  • Informal leadership-development structures inherently benefit the status quo.

Robyn Waters:

  • Peace of mind is the new gold standard.
